Application of Ozone Technology in Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Introducing the characteristics and advantages of ozone technology through practical cases of coking and petrochemical wastewater treatment - Ozone technology, as one of the green and effective deep treatment methods for industrial wastewater, has the characteristics of strong oxidation ability, strong oxidation selectivity (preferentially reacting with unsaturated double bonds), fast reaction speed, and no secondary pollution, and is increasingly attracting people's attention.

Ozone, as one of the green and effective methods for deep treatment of industrial wastewater, has received increasing attention due to its strong oxidation ability, high oxidation selectivity (preferentially reacting with unsaturated double bonds), fast reaction rate, and no secondary pollution. Due to its strong oxidizing and selective properties, ozone can be used to improve the biodegradability of industrial wastewater, while also increasing the dissolved oxygen in the water. The latter stage is then connected to biological treatment units, such as aerated biofilters, to further remove pollutants from the water. This article will further introduce the process characteristics and advantages through two practical application cases of ozone in coking and petrochemical wastewater treatment.

Sankang Ozone Technology

The Sankang ozone generator combines maximum flexibility and reliable operating characteristics. The ozone generator system and control unit can be freely combined and configured to meet various application needs. The Sankang discharge unit adopts a patented technology of a self recovering ozone generation unit with an internal insulator. This technology can ensure that the glass tube is not damaged when the discharge tube encounters a fault and the wire mesh melts instantly. The equipment has a self recovery function during operation, reducing the maintenance time of traditional ozone equipment and ensuring the efficiency of equipment operation.

In order to improve the production efficiency of the ozone generator, the Sankang ozone variable frequency power supply adopts high-frequency technology (1000 Hz). The unit energy consumption of the ozone generator is more linear under different production ranges, that is, as the production decreases, the unit energy consumption (KWh/kgO3) also decreases, and the power consumption can reach ≤ 7kw/kgO3. At the same time, the production adjustment range of the equipment is 10%~100%, and the adjustment is more precise, ultimately achieving energy-saving goals.

Application case of coking wastewater in a certain steel plant

project background

According to the latest "Emission Standards for Pollutants in Coking Chemical Industry" GB16171-2012 standard and the requirements of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, the final effluent CODcr of a certain steel group's sewage plant needs to be reduced to below 50 mg/L.

Solution

In order to adapt to new standards and requirements, the sewage treatment plant has added advanced treatment processes after secondary biochemical treatment to meet the corresponding effluent standards. The total design water volume of the steel wastewater treatment plant is about 150 m3/h, and the average effluent of conventional secondary treatment is CODcr of about 200 mg/L. The advanced treatment process mainly includes ozone pre oxidation, biological aerated filter (BAF), and advanced oxidation process. In 2022, Sankang won the contract for ozone equipment for the advanced treatment system of coking wastewater in the sewage plant, providing customers with a comprehensive solution consisting of ozone generators, ozone dosing systems, and exhaust gas destruction systems. The system has been put into production in 2023.

Technical advantages

Secondary biochemical effluent discharge

After conventional secondary biochemical treatment, there are still a large amount of difficult to biodegrade organic compounds such as phenol, cyanide, benzene, and chromaticity in the sewage. Firstly, by adding a certain amount of ozone, the large molecule recalcitrant organic matter originally contained in the sewage is converted into small molecule organic matter that can be biodegraded, improving the biodegradability of the sewage and removing the chromaticity in the sewage. Then, combined with the subsequent aeration biological filter, the pollutants and chromaticity in the sewage are further degraded and filtered. Finally, advanced oxidation technology is used to ensure that the final effluent CODcr is stable at ≤ 45mg/L, fully meeting the discharge requirements.

With the development of ozone technology in recent years, the production cost (electricity consumption) of ozone has been significantly reduced, and ozone and its related processes have been widely used in industrial wastewater treatment. Based on successful experience in industrial water treatment fields such as petrochemicals, printing and dyeing, and coking in recent years, Sankang Ozone provides customers with stable, energy-saving, and efficient ozone systems to meet the requirements of wastewater treatment and discharge.
